Quick answer
c4.dll is a Waves Audio plug-in file, not a Windows system DLL. It belongs to the C4 Multiband Parametric Processor, now marketed by Waves as the C4 Multiband Compressor.
If Windows reports that c4.dll is missing, not found, or cannot be loaded, do not download a replacement DLL. Identify the DAW or other program requesting it, then reinstall the matching Waves C4 product through Waves Central. Older sessions may require a compatible Waves V9 or V10 installation rather than the newest available version.
Identify the file before repairing it
| Item | Verified identification |
|---|---|
| File | c4.dll |
| Internal description | C4 |
| Product | Multiband Parametric Processor, now C4 Multiband Compressor |
| Publisher | Waves Audio Ltd |
| Type | Third-party audio application plug-in |
| Historical metadata | Some records list a 32-bit file, version 0.0.0.0, about 0.32 MB; this is not current Waves release information |
Publicly indexed DLL metadata is inconsistent, so file size, version and bitness alone cannot prove that a copy is genuine. The important identification is its connection to Waves C4 and the application that is trying to load it.
Current Waves installations commonly use versioned plug-in folders and WaveShell components instead of requiring you to handle c4.dll manually. A current installation may therefore contain a C4 component under a folder such as:

C:Program Files (x86)WavesPlug-Ins V17
The exact folder can differ by installed Waves generation. Do not assume that a missing standalone c4.dll should be placed in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
First find the program requesting c4.dll
The complete error matters. Windows may display messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because c4.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because c4.dll was not found.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located in the dynamic link library c4.dll.”
- “The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b).”
These are generic Windows loader variants. They do not prove that Windows owns the file.
Before changing anything, write down:
- The full error text.
- The executable or DAW name shown in the title bar.
- Whether you were opening a DAW, a Pro Tools session, a Waves application or an installer.
- Your Windows version.
- The DAW version and whether it is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- The Waves version, if known.
- Whether the issue began after an update, uninstall, antivirus alert, disk cleanup or folder move.
If an unrelated application is requesting a file named c4.dll, do not automatically assume that the file belongs to Waves. Check the executable’s installation directory and scan it before restoring anything.
Fix 1: Reinstall C4 through Waves Central
This is the correct first repair when C4 was removed, damaged or incompletely installed.
Install the current Waves version
- Close the DAW and any other audio host.
- Download Waves Central from the official Waves website.
- Install Waves Central using its normal Windows installer.
- Open Start.
- Select All apps.
- Open Waves Central.
- Sign in to the Waves account that owns the C4 license.
- Select Install Products.
- Choose My Products to view products associated with your account, or choose All Products if appropriate.
- Locate C4 Multiband Compressor.
- Select the Waves version compatible with your host and project.
- Click Install or Install & Activate.
- Wait for the installation to complete.
- Restart Windows if Waves Central requests it.
- Open the DAW and rescan plug-ins.
Do not mix an old C4 component with unrelated WaveShell files from another Waves generation. If the error appeared after a Waves update, reinstall the same generation used by the project first. Upgrading an old project to a current plug-in can require a separate compatibility decision.
Check the result
The repair worked if:
- Waves Central reports that C4 installed successfully.
- The DAW discovers C4 during its plug-in scan.
- A new session can insert C4.
- The original project opens without the missing-file message.
If C4 appears in Waves Central but not in the DAW, continue with the plug-in scanning steps below. If Waves Central cannot install it, close the DAW, check available storage and permissions, temporarily disconnect VPN software, and retry. Waves Central licensing and installation can be disrupted by VPN connections.
Fix 2: Use the matching legacy Waves installer
An old project may depend on a legacy Waves plug-in format or generation. This is especially likely when the project was created with Waves V9 or V10, or when the computer has been upgraded while the project itself has not changed.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Install a legacy version
- Close every DAW and Waves application.
- Determine the Waves generation used by the project or the original computer.
- Open Waves’ official Install Waves Legacy Versions instructions.
- Follow the instructions for the required V9, V10 or other supported generation.
- Use the supplied offline or version-specific installer where Waves directs you to do so.
- Sign in or activate the product using the correct Waves account and license method.
- Restart Windows after installation if requested.
- Open the original DAW.
- Run its plug-in rescan.
- Test the project again.
Do not install a V9 or V10 binary and then copy modern V14–V17 WaveShell components around it. Multiple Waves generations can coexist, but Waves says that this arrangement is no longer officially tested or supported.

If only one old session fails while new sessions work, the saved plug-in instance may be obsolete or incompatible. Test C4 in a blank session. That result helps distinguish a project-format problem from a system-wide installation failure.
Fix 3: Make the DAW scan the correct plug-in folder
C4 may be installed correctly but invisible because the DAW is scanning the wrong location or has cached a previous failed scan.
Check the Waves folders
In File Explorer, inspect the usual Waves installation locations:
C:Program Files (x86)WavesPlug-Ins V17
C:Program Files (x86)WavesPlug-Ins V16
C:Program Files (x86)WavesPlug-Ins V15
C:Program Files (x86)WavesPlug-Ins V14
C:Program Files (x86)WavesPlug-Ins V10
C:Program Files (x86)WavesPlug-Ins V9
Only some of these folders may exist. Do not create a fake folder and fill it with a downloaded DLL.
For VST3 plug-ins, also check:
C:Program FilesCommon FilesVST3
C:Program Files (x86)Common FilesVST3
Waves may expose plug-ins through a WaveShell rather than a directly selectable C4 DLL. The DAW should normally scan the appropriate WaveShell or standard VST3 location, not a random Windows system directory.
Rescan from the DAW
The menu names vary, but the process is similar:
- Open the DAW’s preferences or settings.
- Open Plug-ins, VST, Plug-in Manager or Audio Plug-ins.
- Confirm that the correct Waves and VST3 locations are listed.
- Enable Rescan, Full Rescan, Clear Cache and Rescan or the equivalent option.
- Start the scan.
- Restart the DAW.
- Search for C4 Multiband Compressor rather than only searching for
c4.dll.
If the DAW has a failed-plug-in blacklist, remove C4 from that list or reset the cache, then scan again. If the scan still fails, check whether the DAW is 32-bit or 64-bit and compare that with the Waves generation being installed.
Fix 4: Check 32-bit, 64-bit and version compatibility
A 32-bit legacy DLL cannot be made into a proper 64-bit plug-in by moving it to another directory. Architecture, host support, Windows version and Waves generation must agree.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck these items:
- Is the DAW 32-bit or 64-bit?
- Is the installed Waves version supported by that DAW?
- Is the project using a legacy Waves generation?
- Is the host looking for VST2, VST3, AU or AAX?
- Is the C4 license activated?
- Did the problem begin after moving from an older Waves version to a newer one?
Waves states that V14 is 64-bit only. Waves also states that VST2 is not supported from V15 onward. Therefore, an old host expecting a VST2 or 32-bit C4 component may not work with a current installation.
For Pro Tools, verify that the installed Waves generation supports the Pro Tools version and that the AAX component was installed. For other DAWs, verify the appropriate VST3 or supported format instead of adding arbitrary DLL files.
Fix 5: Check licensing and activation
A missing-file message and a licensing problem can look similar because both prevent a plug-in from loading.
- Open Waves Central.
- Sign in to the correct account.
- Open the product installation or activation area.
- Confirm that C4 is listed among your products.
- Activate it to the computer or approved device as required.
- Restart Waves Central.
- Open the DAW and rescan the plug-ins.
If C4 is visible in the DAW but reports that it is not licensed, reinstalling c4.dll will not solve the issue. The license must be activated through Waves. If the product is absent from the account, contact Waves support with proof of purchase or the account details used for the original installation.

Fix 6: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine a plug-in after an update, particularly if the file was installed incompletely or the security product detected a suspicious copy.
Windows Security steps
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Select Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving Waves, C4 or the relevant plug-in folder.
- Review the detected file path and action.
- Restore or allow the file only if it is inside a legitimate Waves installation and its publisher and installation context are trustworthy.
- Run a repair or reinstall from Waves Central.
- Rescan plug-ins in the DAW.
If the file appears in a temporary folder, an unknown download directory or an unrelated application folder, do not restore it automatically. Scan the computer and reinstall the product from Waves instead.
Fix 7: Repair Windows components only when the evidence points to Windows
c4.dll is not a Microsoft runtime file. DISM and System File Checker do not directly restore a missing Waves plug-in, so use them as a secondary check rather than the primary repair.
Run Windows Update first:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the PC.
Then run the repairs from an elevated Command Prompt:

- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall C4 through Waves Central if the file is still missing.
Microsoft documents these commands in its System File Checker guidance. They repair Windows components and protected system files, not third-party Waves files.
When manually repeating SFC and DISM makes it difficult to know what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what its free scan finds; repairs are performed by the full version, while reinstalling Waves C4 remains the definitive fix for this application file.
Check optional Windows components only when named by the error
Do not enable random Windows Features because a DLL error mentions Windows. If the complete error explicitly identifies .NET Framework or another Windows component:
- Open Start.
- Type
Windows Features. - Select Turn Windows features on or off.
- Enable only the component named by the error.
- Select OK.
- Restart if requested.
- Retry the application.
There is no evidence that Visual C++, DirectX or .NET is the normal fix for c4.dll. Install or repair one of those components only when the complete error identifies it or the application’s official requirements call for it.

Fix 8: Update audio and chipset drivers when the host also crashes
Drivers are not the usual cause of a missing c4.dll, but an audio host that crashes, produces device errors or fails after a Windows upgrade may also have an audio-driver problem.
Update through Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the audio interface or sound device.
- Select Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Install a driver if Windows finds one.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the DAW again.
You can also expand System devices and update a chipset device only when the computer manufacturer provides a compatible driver. Avoid replacing a working professional audio-interface driver with a generic driver unless the manufacturer recommends it.
When checking several audio, chipset and controller drivers manually becomes guesswork, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify outdated drivers; its free scan shows the findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version, and Waves Central remains the definitive repair for C4 itself.
If the DAW works with the audio device disconnected but still cannot find C4, return to Waves installation and plug-in scanning rather than continuing with driver changes.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix 9: Refresh Waves preferences and cache
A damaged Waves preference or cache state can prevent an installed plug-in from appearing.
- Close the DAW.
- Open File Explorer.
- Click the address bar.
- Enter:
%appdata%Waves Audio
- Press Enter.
- Move the Waves Audio folder to the Desktop. Do not delete it yet.
- Open the DAW and start a fresh session.
- Locate the plug-in folder again in the DAW’s settings.
- Run a full plug-in scan.
- Test C4.
If this resolves the issue, the old preference folder was likely damaged. If it does not, close the DAW and restore the original folder if you need its settings, then continue with a clean Waves reinstall.
What not to do
Do not download a standalone c4.dll
Random DLL download sites may provide malware, a modified file, the wrong Waves generation or the wrong architecture. A replacement may also fail because the plug-in needs matching WaveShell components, licensing data or other files.
The safe source is the official Waves installer, using Waves Central for current products and Waves’ official legacy installation route for older projects.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Do not copy it to System32 or SysWOW64
Those folders contain Windows components and architecture-specific system files. Placing an audio plug-in there does not register it with a DAW and can create a second, untrusted copy that complicates troubleshooting.
Do not run regsvr32 as a generic fix
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Normal audio plug-ins are not automatically COM servers, and Waves does not provide verified guidance requiring regsvr32 c4.dll for C4.

Running:
regsvr32 c4.dll
may produce an error saying that the entry point was not found. That result does not repair the plug-in. Use registration only if the application’s official documentation specifically requires it and gives the exact file and command.

FAQ
Is c4.dll part of Windows?
No. It is associated with Waves Audio’s C4 plug-in and should not normally be installed in Windows system folders.
Which program is asking for c4.dll?
Usually a DAW, audio host or project loading Waves C4, but the executable name in the full error is essential. Do not assume every c4.dll request comes from Waves.
Should I install Microsoft Visual C++?
Only if the complete error explicitly identifies a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime or another application requirement. c4.dll itself is not a Microsoft runtime file.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why does C4 install but not appear in my DAW?
The DAW may be scanning the wrong VST3 or Waves location, may have a failed-plug-in cache, or may be incompatible with the installed Waves generation. Confirm the folder, clear the scan cache and rescan.
Can a 32-bit C4 plug-in run in a 64-bit DAW?
Not directly. The host, plug-in format and Waves generation must be compatible. A file’s location cannot change its architecture.
Why does only one project fail?
That project may contain an obsolete Waves plug-in instance or use a legacy format. Test C4 in a new session and install the matching Waves generation if the old project requires it.
Will SFC restore c4.dll?
No. SFC repairs protected Windows system files. It does not reinstall a missing third-party Waves plug-in.
Recommended Free Tools
Is regsvr32 required?
Normally no. Use it only when official application instructions explicitly require DLL registration.
What is the safest fix?
Identify the requesting host, install the compatible C4 version through Waves Central or the official legacy installer, confirm activation, then rescan the DAW.
